How come baseball pitchers don't start every game?

How come baseball pitchers don't start every game? If its because they need to rest, than they are really lazy and week.|||they need rest......DUH|||you try throwing 100 pitches with full effort and tell me how you feel the next day|||It's surprising nobody has put the entire staff on a 30-pitch-a -day limit.|||starting pitchers use all their energy just for one pitch and their pitch count can go to 100 and they feel dead the next day.|||you are an idiot if they are so lazy and weak then i assume you will go out and throw 100 pitches at 90 mph and do the same thing the next day.|||Are lazy and weak? Let me see you throw around 90 pitches at the range around 80-100 mph.

PS- How is it possible for someone to be playing in the MLB and be weak at the same time? Great! I learned something new today.

So, you are the smartest in this section, why do we care? Never even seen your display nick and yet you're the smartest? That's cool.|||CONGRATULATIONS!! You are in the running for dumbest question ever, I hope you win!!

EDIT:

"I am smarter than everyone here, so don't tell me this a stupid question"

really..your smarter then everyone here?? Your right this a stupid question....good grammar tard.|||sometimes they are late getting out of the showers, some of those guys like to beat the meat in the shower before pitching.|||really jean c. your queen GET A LIFE!!

its because they go out and give it their all and pitch between 90 and 130 pitches and you call them lazy.

pitchers pitched everyday in the 20s and 30s because they didn't have the technology to count pitches and the pitchers didn't care as much about their arms|||For the same reason that bodybuilders don't work the same bodyparts on consecutive days. The body grows and recovers between exercise sessions, or in this case, between starts. Plus, the human body was not made to throw overhand, so there are a lot of small, supporting muscles in the shoulder that must have time to recover.

This is one of the stupidest questions on here in a long time, but it has a lot of competition for the title of "Stupidest question of all time". And one more thing- "week" describes a period of time equal to 7 days. "Weak" is the word you were looking for here, which describes a lack of strength.|||Because it would absolutely kill their arm.|||Cause the job he has to do is so demanding, that, the people who run baseball know from experience how many days off a person needs for the work they do. :)

What is the significance of the first few weeks of baseball season?

I'm really amused hearing all these people making assumptions about the rest of the season based on barely a week of play. "OMG the Red Sox are 2-5 the sky is falling," "OMG Wang has a 28 ERA send him to AA," etc...

Am I the only individual who recognizes that besides injuries, NOTHING that goes on in the first few weeks of baseball season is relevant to the rest of the season?

At the end of April last year the D'Backs were one of the best teams in baseball... How did that turn out?|||Yeah, teams get off to a bad start and everyone thinks they're done for the season.

The first few weeks aren't an indication of how well a team is going to do, but in the long run, the games count for a lot.

The first few weeks aren't to be taken TOO seriously, but the problem is that some people aren't taking them seriously enough. When a team is one game out of the playoff race, is anyone going to think back to that game they blew in early April? Probably not, but that game suddenly counts for a lot. This is how division championships are lost.|||I agree with you the First Month is important , but not as much .

i Start to realize how my team is doing the Yankees In the All Star break to me August is the Most important month in the Baseball season, i wait until then to see how the shape of the Yankees is|||Pennant races are won and lost in August and September.

But, nowadays, teams play as many as 28 games in April. If you have a crappy April and lose ground in your division, you may not be able to make that up later. So, April baseball is more important than it was, say, 25 years ago.|||you cant judge a team on how they do early in the season.it means nothing that a team is 3 and 9 or 6 and 15. a team can turn it around in a hurry. a win streak of 7 in a row could happen, baseball is a funny game.the braves are doing great now,but where will they be in august? no won knows that answer. the season needs to be played out by each team. i guess thats it.|||the first week does not matter at all

that's why i don't like to watch espn as much now because they make things bigger than they are supposed to be is just so ridiculous

every team has bad weeks if the red sox had gone 2-5 on July it would of not been a problem|||It really mean nothing at this point what happens It is not like in football if your team is 2-5 you may be in trouble but in baseball you can make that up in 3 days possibly. I mean I will not make predictions on who will win anything before the all-star break.|||In league play, every game is just as important. We have seen plenty of teams win the division by one game, but that wouldn't have happened had the team lost one more game, whether it is in April or September. Likewise, the team that finished a game behind could have tied for the division championship by winning one more game in April or September.

Sure, baseball has many more games on the schedule than other sports. Consequently, teams that make the playoffs will lose more total games than an NBA or NFL team, some coming in April and some coming later in the season. There are certainly exceptions to the rule - teams that struggled early but finished strong enough to win the division. Conversely there are teams that struggled down the stretch, but also won the division.

There are many other variables that come into play as the season progresses - injuries, pressure, etc. - but ask any player and I'm sure they will tell you they would rather have a winning record in April than a losing one.

It seems like you are just waiting to find out who will be in the races to start watching, even though a win now is just as important as a win will be then.

Where can I sell baseball cards for mucho dinero?

I've got a load of old baseball cards in collectible condition and I haven't found a really reliable way of selling them. A lot of them are definitely collector's items to some people and I don't want to go selling those for like 10 bucks at a pawn shop. Remember in Blast From the Past? Remember how the main character sold a bunch of old baseball cards and got loads of money for them. Well anyway I want to sell some of mine and I'd appreciate any help on this topic.|||Bring them to a Sports Card show and show them to several dealers. You should go with a price you would accept in mind, if all the dealers give you a figure way under what you think you should be getting, then you're probably way off on their actual value. Sports cards prior to 1980 are "old", anything newer is not. Do your research, buy a guide, read it, learn how to grade and put a value on your cards - then hit the shows or local stores.|||I would go to checkoutmycards.com. You create an account online and then you send them your cards. They scan your cards, lookup their book prices, and upload them to your online collection. You can set the asking price for how much you want to sell your cards. And then, they house, insure and advert

How do you get ready for a baseball tryout?

I have a baseball tryout in a month, and I want to be physically/mentally ready. I really want to make this team. Any advice?|||Defense first?? In baseball?? I don't think so. I have never seen a league where they have a "Designated Fielder" rather than a Designated Hitter. Work on your hitting man. GOOD teams will look at your offense and worry about your defense later. There will come a time when GOOD teams will need pinch hitters in situations. GOOD coaches will know this, and are more likely to take a good offensive player that is shaky in the field over a good fielder that can't hit. Also, hustle everywhere. Run on the field, run off of the field. This is a simple thing, and very easy to do. If you have time, work on your defense, but I must stress that this will be the least important part of your game in a tryout. In the event that you are practicing with the kids that are already on the team, find the Captain(s) and do whatever they tell you to do. If any player is going to have input on new guys it is going to be the Captain. Make friends with him. In summary, you have to try to impress in a tryout. Hit the ball as far and as hard as you can, and throw the ball as far and as hard as you can. DO NOT I repeat DO NOT hit a cut-off man if you are an outfielder. It is better to throw the ball out of the park than to hit a cut-off man during a tryout. You want to show them how hard and far you can throw, not how accurate. Accuracy will come later. Again, don't worry about your fielding lol. Very unimportant.

Good hitters only get a hit 30% of the time because of good pitching not good defense. I have no idea where the myth originates that a good defensive player will be a good hitter. That's absolutely fallacious, and it has no logic behind it whatsoever. Anyone who knows anything about baseball knows that you can hide bad defensive players ESPECIALLY if they are good hitters. It is a little more difficult to hide a bad hitter in the lineup because he is going to bat at least 4 times during a game, and possibly once or more in an RBI situation. A bad defender may go an entire week without even having a ball hit to him. Naturally there are positions where defense is important such as shortstop and second base. These guys do not have to be as good at offense as the other position players, because they are generally in there for defense. Work on your hitting! I guarantee if you go out and hit 5 or 6 balls out of the park during a batting practice round but muffed your defense, that a good coach would be more likely to keep you than if you made 5 or 6 diving catches in the outfield and could not hit the ball out of the infield.|||Im a assistant baseball coach for a high school, when i look at something, I want defense first, offense later, and it usually works. I look at your arm strength, how good you are at grounders, fly balls..etc. Go to the park work on these things. Coaches figure is you can throw, you can hit. So focus on your defense. Mentally, just take a deep breath and have confidence in yourself, of course you are going to be nervous, you can;t do anything about that, just relax, focus and let your game speak for it's self. But WORK ON YOUR DEFENSE! GOOD coaches know that when looking at your DEFENSE, you can know how good you are at hitting they figure that you are a good all around player. THIS I DO KNOW! FOR HIGH SCHOOL AND RECREATIONAL TEAMS, DEFENSE IS IMPORTANT. Why do you think good players only hit the ball 30 percent of the time, because of good defense.|||Stretch every day and make sure to eat well so u will have strength then just throw the ball against a wall or play catch after have some one toss you balls to hit to get warmed up after that make them throw it hard to get you comfortable. Throw and catch pop flys too. Keep doing that every day till you break a sweat. Also don't get into bad habits by short arming a throw go all the way thruu. Make sure u ask someone good if you are doing everything properly after you are done stretch agian to cooldown ;) I went all the way to county so trust me it works I hit 5 homeruns in a season and I'm only 5 ft tall|||Get a lot of BP in the cage or at a local batting cage. Stay fit and work on your conditioning also. And Just relax because you don't wanna be nervous and choke. So just be confident in yourself and go as hard as you can.|||Go out to a batting cage and hit some balls. If you can, you should try pitching and catching. Good baseball teams want and all-around guy. Just relax, and have fun, and remember, ALWAYS PRACTICE!|||Everyone had some good tips but i'd recommend (if you have someone to play catch with) play a lot of long toss. Found that it is the best way to strengthen your throwing arm.|||play baseball with your friends or something|||Do some running, work on your hitting, and work on fielding!wear proper gear, cleats ,pants and a hat and a shirt!|||just do some simple excercises and throwing and batting

How long do you think it will be before boring baseball becomes extinct?

Lets face it. Baseball popularity is no where near where it was decades ago. Most young people today think its boring and slow. Now all the hype is on football, basketball and soccer and other sports. No one really cares about the World Series as much anymore. Only a few old timers really care about it because back then they had nothing else to do. Once most of them are dead, baseball will only become a distant memory. The only good thing about it is helped put people to sleep more than most sleeping pills. What do you think?|||-When the Chicago Cubs win the World Series (So don't hold your Breath! ) . ;)|||Your use of the phrase "boring baseball" always tips us off that this is another sock puppet account.

You are correct in one thing. Baseball popularity *is* nowhere near where it was decades ago. In the 50s average total attendance for all levels was around 40 million, and in 2008 total baseball attendance was over 110 million.

So, even though it was an accident of phrasing, you did (finally) get one thing right.|||Wow. You are crazy if you think baseball's gonna go extinct. What 3 teams would you consider to be the greatest baseball teams in the history of Major League Baseball?

This is a question to any knowledgeable baseball fan. What 3 teams would you consider to be the greatest baseball teams in the history of Major League Baseball?

You can go back from the 1920's to modern day baseball.

However, by doing so one must exemplify and give answers and background to each team that he picks representative for the 3 best teams. It must be also a team that has some sort of dynasty connected with it. Please respond.|||The best team I ever saw was the 1998 Yankees and as much as it pains me to say that as a Met die hard, it's the truth. I watched almost ever Yankee game that year and it was hard to hate them. They had the perfect build; pitching, power, speed, defense and a great bullpen. They could play small ball, they could slug it out. And the funny thing is, there were only two HOFers on that team.

The best teams though in my opinion-

1927 Yankees- the team was the start of the great Yankee teams and with Ruth and Gehrig anchoring a powerhouse lineup, for that time period anyhow, they were almost unbeatable.

1955 Brooklyn Dodgers- it's hard NOT to include them because if it weren't for the crosstown Yankees, the bums would have won a few more championships while in Brooklyn. The team rivaled the Yankees in terms of HOFers. I'll go to the grave saying that it's a crime that Gil Hodges isn't in the Hall.

1961 New York Yankees- The M%26amp;M boys made that an exciting summer because of the homerun chase. And with all the venom that Maris had to endure, the supposed rivalry between the party animal Mantle and the quiet family man Maris that the media tried to create which didn't exist, it took away from one of the most exciting baseball seasons for Yankee fans and baseball fans.

Honorable Mentions:

I'm also going to mention the 1986 Mets because that team could have done more. Since many fans like to compare the past and the present, had the divsion and playoff format been like it is today back in the 80's, the Mets would have made the playoffs from 1984-at least 1990. That team was much like the 1998 Yankees team, perectly crafted. Pitching, power, speed, defense, great bullpen for it's time. Davey Johnson said in Spring training that the team was going to dominate, and they did. Of course they didn't dominate in the WS, but it wouldn't be a Met team without some drama now would it. Had injuries not snake bit the 87 team, they could have very well repeated (not taking anything away from St. Louis or Minnesota) and in 1988 they ran into a red hot Dodger team and Orel Hershiser. An Oakland/New York WS would have been epic. The teams were so similiar it wasn't funny.

I'm also very partial to the 1990's Braves team that should have/could have won more championships than they did. Plus that rotation is one of the best ever assembled. Maddux, Glavine, Smoltz and Avery- 6 Cy Youngs between them (Avery could have very well won one).|||The Big Red Machine in the 1970's comes to mind and so does the Oakland A's team that won 3 times in a row in the 1970's

I do not care to consider teams before Free Agnecy or when baseball was segregated.|||1 Yankees

2 Red Sox

3 Dodgers

If there is a person on 1st base and you are in left field, you throw the ball to short stop. If instead of left field, you were in right field, you would throw it to the second baseman. If you were in centerfield, you would throw it to the person(2nd or shortstop) who is not covering second base. If there was a runner at 2nd and you were in left field, you would throw it to shortstop. If you were in right field, you would throw it to the second baseman who then would throw it to 3rd. If you have runners on 1st 2nd and 3rd then you throw it too the cutoff man, usually the SS or go too homeplate if the runner is tagging up. PLEASE HELP !|||kicking has nothing to do with baseball, that's football and soccer and making shots is basketball. baseball is you're on a field with 4 bases(1st, 2nd, 3rd, and home) you stand next to home plate and someone throws a round ball to you and you try to hit it. also a curveball is a type of pitch baseball pitchers throw. before you get to the field just tell him to explain everything and maybe he can help you which should be good since you like him. good luck|||Baseball = Hitting a ball with a bat (a stick basically) if your not the one hitting the objective is to catch the ball. Just go with it and im sure he will teach you what to do.

If You are not from the US, Canada or Japan I understand why you don't know a thing about baseball but if thats not the case get professional help.|||Why are you yelling at me?

Go get help in the relationship section or something.

NO, baseball is not when you make shots/kicks, it's when you work your *** of trying to hit homers, triples, doubles, and singles. Come on... America's Past Time favorite, baby!|||Make sure you bring shin guards and shoulder pads. Also you're gonna need a baseball stick.

A "curveball" is a ball that has an abrupt curve in the middle to lower wind resistance.|||oh dear.

there's no kicking in baseball. there are no shots either.

i think you should honestly tell him you don't know how to play...he'll probably have a lot of fun teaching you, adn he gets to feel like the cool guy showing a girl what he knows.|||Just go and have some fun. Once he teaches you how to hold the racket it will all make sense.

"There is no kicking in baseball"...That's not what Johnny Cueto said.|||You are beyond help. Accept his invitation and have some fun, I think he will teach you the game.

Baseball . . .?

Why do baseball players tap the base with their bats?|||1st of all, its home plate, not a base

but they do it to make sure they are the right distance from the plate. Players know they should be able to reach the outside corner with the bat, so they will tap the plate to make sure they are close enough to do so.

Plus, a lot of players have a routine they go through, no reason other than personal preference.|||Square up, both aligning themselves with the plate and ensuring they are standing the distance they want to back from the plate (you can tell if you're farther forward or back then you usually are by the slack in your arms when you have the bat on the same part of the plate each time). For many players this is just a habit or ritual they go through to get in the rhythm of the at-bat.|||Square up to the plate. They don't tape a base first, second and third are bases, home is a plate.|||They tap the plate not the base. It's a rhythym routine for them that is all.|||It's just a routine they go through.

Major League Baseball.|||If you didn't know what it was, how would you have known to come to this section and ask?|||it's a game in wich the field is shaped like a dimond and there are nine positions, then the pitcher "throws" the ball to the batter ( who is from an other team) then the batter hits it and runs around the 3 bases. and when he gets all the way back to home plate, his team gets a point.|||look at these . it show all of ur answers|||are u serious?|||a game where whoever scores da most wins|||a word|||A GAME IN WHICH THEY GET PAID TO MUCH AND USE STERIODS TO COMPETE

Baseball?????????

when you say that a baseball teams record is 1-7 does that mean they won 1 game and lost 7 games? im very confused. thanks much!|||The overall win-loss record is just that: Wins and Losses.

Therefore a 1-7 record would indicate 1 Win and 7 Losses.

This is different from "The Count" which is the number of balls and strikes a batter has accumulated over the at-bat so far. Example: A 3-2 count or "full count" (3 Balls, 2 Strikes)

Hope this helps. For more accurate sports info you can visit the website below.|||He is absolutly right.

When you hit, if you were 1 for 4, then you got on base one time out of 4 at bats. When there is a walk, a sacrifice bunt, a hit by pitch, and intentional walk do not count as at bats.

Hmmm should i join baseball in only 5'3 and tryouts on tuesday its highschool btw!|||if you want to try out, go for it. you can never know how many people are going to try out for the team or if you are good enough to make it unless you try out. realistically, if you are only 5'3, you may be limited to some posistions, but there have been some great athletes that were undersized.|||if ur good at baseball then yea try out

size doesnt matter for baseball- it just means a smaller strikezone when ur batting|||Size doesn't matter - David Eckstein|||Go for it! Size doesn't matter in baseball. It's all about skill. As long as you are a skillful player you're good to go. Hope you make it!|||I have managed a baseball team for the last 8 years and what I can tell you is this. Baseball is one of the few sports that size does not matter. If you can hit the ball, your coach will "find" a spot for you to play. Speed kills in this game, so if you have it, your coach will exploit it. If you have an average glove but you are a great hitter, you will play.

Baseball??

I am currently lifting weights for the baseball season. I am doing benches, shoulder press, wrist curls and i am working on my triceps.

Is there any other exercises I should be doing?

Would working on my biceps or deltoids help throwing or hitting?|||Work your core. Stomach, Hamstrings and Quads. Believe it or not, most of throwing and hitting comes from trunk rotation as well. Obviously large arms helps, but a very strong core enables greater control of weight shifting, allowing for longer hits and harder throws. Do leg curls and leg extensions for your hams/quads and do sit-ups/crunches, leg lifts and other stomach and back exercises for your core.

Hope this helps!|||do some leg exercises that will help you overall|||Take many swings a day with a bat. It will loosen up your muscles and prevent pulls and strains.|||wow, definately not good. you need to seriously be doing leg and ab exercises THE hardest. for arms, do forearms very intensely and the back. do rotator cuff exercises. you can also do tris and bis secondary. do not do shoulder press. it will greatly reduce your flexibility in your shoulder. same goes for bench press. do dumbell bench press instead. the barbell is bad for the shoulders (heard this from a pro scout i talked to).

do not think that arms are going to be the power of throwing and hitting. your legs, hips, and abs are going to produce the biggest portion of your power, along with forearms, back, and rotator cuff.|||Be sure to stretch. When you get big with muscle and don't stretch, you agility could decrease as your arms and legs can't extend very well. So be careful.|||Your core. My instructor emphasized that your core is important for a strong swing. Get a partner and do sit ups with them but get a medicine ball or a heavy ball and when you come up throw it to them and they will throw it back to you when you go down.|||Do leg exercises. That will help you in both hitting and throwing.|||squats man. Squats in just about any sport it helps you run faster and get more steals, plus pretty much all of your power comes from your legs.

Read up on some of the famous players such as Nolan Ryan, Babe Ruth, Mickey Mantle, and Roberto Clemente. Find out why they call Yankee Stadium "The House that Ruth Built." I know you said no wikipedia, but go there anyways. You can learn about all the different baseball teams and players from both the past and the present. What are some drills i can do to get better at baseball in a small location with just 12 baseballs 2 bats and 2 gloves and all alone?|||Use the towel drill, it's a great drill. This drill is used to help keep a hitter from uppercutting and force him to take a shorter, more compact swing. Place a towel under the batter's front elbow and have him take swing against live pitching. If he swings correctly, the towel will not fall to the ground because the elbow will pull down, forcing the hands down and making them quicker through the strike zone. If the batter uppercuts, the front elbow will fly upward and the towel will fall. This drill can be used in alkl types of batting practice.

Don't use this drill too much beacuse it shortens the arc of the swing out in front where you want extension. Use this primarily for hitter who chicken wing the lead arm.|||They recently invented something called a batting cage which is helpful

One of the good things about baseball is that you can practice pretty much anywhere and someone can help you who doesnt know much at all about baseball. Just be creative. The 180 swings will help you increase your bat speed and hip rotation as well as practice "dragging (for outside pitches)" and "pulling(for inside pitches)" your hands through the strike zone.

Fielding- Find a wall and practice throwing the ball off the bottom of the wall and fielding grounders.|||Run or hit against a net.|||For hitting, go to the ballpark and hit balls against the fence. As you are tossing them up for yourself, try to put some outside, some inside, also try and hit some chest high and some knee high.

What's the difference between baseball turf shoes and football turf shoes?

I'm having problems finding football turf shoes in my size and was wondering if I could substitute a baseball turf to play wide receiver on an older turf surface. What is the significance of the homerun record in baseball?

Why above all other metrics in baseball, is the homerun given the most significance of a baseball player's career? Or is it?|||Think about the fact that professional baseball existed for 40-50 years before Babe Ruth came along. In the 20 years or so immediately prior to Ruth, the homerun leader each season averaged about 10 per year. Ruth came along and revolutionized the game, made it more popular and made it America's Pasttime. It also became a game of power, where one prodigous swing could change the outcome of the game. As the games greatest player the statistics Ruth compiled became a measuring stick for all future players. In conclusion the Homerun record is one set by an Immortal a player above all his peers. To reach the strata of that record is to become god-like|||One of the best known players of all-time, Hank Aaron, is about to have his best known record surpassed by a cheater.|||The homerun record is -I think- 2nd hardest to break (1st is of course Cy Youngs 511 wins).

People are really talked about this whole Homerun king because a great player Hank Aaron is about to have his record shattered by another great player, Barry Bonds.

There's a cycle here though...

When Babe Ruth was HR King, people hated Hank Aaron for breaking his record.

Now Hank Aaron is HR King, people hate Barry Bonds for breaking his record.

When Barry Bonds is HR King, people are going to hate A-Rod for breaking his record.

And people are going to hate some japanese guy for saying this...

It's a really big honor in baseball to have a record like HR King. Not alot of people are able to do it. That's what makes it so significant. I say the same to Cy Youngs 511 wins as well.|||i am a red sox fan and if a-rod breaks bond's record i will not hate him for it. no one ever hated Arron for breaking ruth's record. they hate barry bonds for lying, his attitude, and this whole steroid thing. barry was a great player before taking steroids but, he took them and lied about it. the thing is that he will NEVER admit it.|||The homerun is the most significant because it is the highest you can get. Whether it be a solo shot or a grand slam, you can't do anything that is better than hitting a homerun. It's alot hard to hit one homerun than some might think let alone hitting 755. I think 755 will always be the record, of course until A-Rod breaks it a couple years down the road. 755 is the record.|||It's one of the most sacred records in all of sports. Think about how difficult it is to break. A player would have to average almost 38 home runs a year for 20 straight seasons. There are not many who can hit that many in one season, let alone keep that pace up for multiple seasons. It's a record that takes an entire career by a phenomenal player to set and it really shows what a special player Hank Aaron was.|||Who is that fool saying they didn t hate aaron for breaking the babe's record, they threatend his life son!

How do you get autographs from baseball players?

Our vacations are visiting ballparks during the summer. How do you get baseball players autographs? Before at batting practice or after games when they leave? Which Major League Baseball Team Was The Last to Integrate?

As we know, on April 15, 1947, Jackie Robinson broke the color barrier and became the first black Major League Baseball player in modern times. He played for the Brooklyn Dodgers. After that, the other teams gradually acquired black players.

How did the New York Yankees become the richest baseball club in Major League Baseball?

The New York Yankees are the richest baseball club in Major League Baseball and possibly the richest ball club in the world. The team is world millions of dollars and they pay the players very well and are currently building a New Yankee Stadium costing millions and millions of dollars.

How did the New York Yankees become the richest baseball club in Major League Baseball and what is their success to being financally secured ball club?|||Being located in New York City certainly helps, but historically the Yankees have made some fantastic business decisons over the years. Steinbrenner bought the team for $10 million from CBS in 1973. The team is now valued at 1.2 billion dollars.

The Yankees generate more income than any other sports franchise in America. Here are the figures for 2006:

REVENUE:

Ticket sales = $117 million (4.178 million tickets @ $28 avg)

YES Network TV/radio rights = $60 million

Major League TV and licensing = $30 million

Concessions = $10 million

Sponsorships and advertising = $30 million

Premium seating = $27 million

Local radio = $13 million

Catering = $5 million

Other = $10 million

TOTAL = $302 million

OPERATING COSTS:

Player salaries = $195 million

Major League revenue-sharing fees = $70 million

Major League luxury tax = $25 million

Stadium operations = $20 million

Travel and training = $20 million

TOTAL = $330 million

2006 TOTAL = $28 million loss

HOW IT WORKS:

Yankees management plays two games. The first is the day-to-day running of the team. Fifty-one thousand fans pay an average of $28 to come to 81 home games, where they suck down sodas and hot dogs for $4.50 each, generating half the team’s sales. The other half comes from $140 million in ad deals and media rights. The largest expense is player costs, which run about $200 million a year, and then there’s league revenue sharing and the costs of flying the team around the country. But eking out a marginal profit on operations is hardly the aim. The bigger game they’re playing is maximizing the value of the team itself. No need to worry about last year’s $28 million loss, when its value rose $200 million, to $1.2 billion. “Like a piece of property in New York City, it’s really not an annual profit-and-loss-based business,” says Joseph Perello, former vice-president of business development. The Yankees—read Steinbrenner—also own more than a third of the YES network, which broadcasts Yankees games to 8.7 million subscribers. The network’s revenues top a quarter billion and its profit margin is 60 percent. Though a completely separate business from the Yankees, YES’s value is directly tied to how much interest people have in the team, making a $200 million payroll a very easy decision.

By purchasing a related business - a cable network like YES - they rake in ever more profits. A very smart move by Steinbrenner and staff.

They also run a tight ship - the Yankees staff is a mere 200 in New York, including the players and the Staten Island farm team. Most stadium staffers are contracted out.

More good news: The Yankees will get a break on their revenue sharing bill when they open their $800 million team-financed new stadium in 2009. Teams can deduct stadium operations expenses including construction costs from the revenues eligible to be shared with low revenue teams.

They are called the "Evil Empire" by other clubs (usually Boston) but they are the model franchise that all other MLB teams should copy.|||Thank you for the break down of New York Yankees cost. You did a great job.Hope you come back in the future.

How do you become a good baseball infielder/outfielder?

Are there any specific exercises i should practise in order to become a good baseball infielder/outfielder? What do the positions require as skill?|||i catch on my baseball team, and this really taught me that to keep the ball in front of you, you have to stay down on it. don't try to make the throw before you have the ball. and it's not about making the all-star play. coaches and fans would rather you make a tacky stop but keep runs from scoring, over trying to inappropriately spruce up the play to get some camera time. then it comes to footwork. when you shuffle for a ball, make sure you don't cross your legs as you do so; this results in loss of balance, and ultimately falling over. once you have the ball, SET-YOUR-FEET and make a good throw to the appropriate base. those are the blatant basics. as for out fielding, keep your glove closed and close to your chest as you run for the ball, rather than leaving it in the air. bring your glove out and catch the ball once you're there. as soon as you know the ball is coming to you (which should be right off the bat, no pun intended), take three steps backwards. then make your decision from there. if you can, try to run up under the ball, so your momentum is towards the infield. catch the ball on your throwing shoulder, with both hands up, and make a clean throw to the correct infielder. the rest is practice.|||I used to play for the Red Sox.....this is not a joke. I was in the minor league system and was hurt running bases....

The key to any good infielder/outfielder is proper footwork, if you are an athletic postion and your feet are in correct postion it makes everything smoother. Throwing, moving laterally and it even increases arm strength. I would be happy to help with more tips. My email is derekrix@rocketmail.com|||If you're an infielder have someone throw ground balls to you and you just throw them back. For outfielding the same thing with pop flies instead of grounders. Just practice a lot, and if you work at it for long enough, you'll end up being a pretty good player.|||Every infielder must strive to achieve the following. He must have:

1. The correct attitude

2. Excellent sensory perception

3. Good rhythm with all ground balls

4. Proper mechanics

5. The ability to make the plays.

Once he has developed these five areas, he must never settle for anything short of perfection.

What do you think would happen if baseball put in a salary cap next year?

What if, for whatever reason, Bud Selig put a salary cap on baseball next year? Do you think that it would dramatically change baseball? I hear all the time about how baseball needs a salary cap, so if it finally was put in place, what do you think would happen?|||It depends on what the salary cap was set at. If it was set at 150,000,000, then yes, the Red Sox would be just as screwed as the Yankees. If the salary cap was set at 200,000,000, then the Yankees could just get rid of someone like Lance Berkman and be under the limit. And then still have some money left over to replace him. (Berkman's 2010 salary- $14,500,000, team salary- $206,333,389. 206,333,389-14,500,000=$191,833,389 total salary) I don't think it would be as catastrophic as everyone thinks it would be, it just depends on what the cap was set at.|||Teams like the Yankees and Redsox would have to sell the farm to get under cap creating a free agent bonanza. After that we don't know who would be good because caps tend to even everything up and potentially change the tide of every team. This doesn't necesarily mean small market teams automatically become winners and big market teams become losers though. It simply sets them on an even plain. The Yankees could spiral, or they could sitll be good, depends on what the replacements do. Hell even the Pirates could be good if they make the right moves. It'd turn the entire leauge on it's head. Anyone can be good, anyone can suck.|||You people just don't understand how Major League Baseball operates. The Commissioner does NOT have to authority to unilaterally put in a salary cap. @ Cheer girl %26lt;--------- Epic failure at life|||Big market teams would pretty much be screwed. The Yankees would be getting rid of much of their team.

The reason is because there would be so little time to make a decision. If a salary cap was put into baseball, there would be more time........maybe a 5 year thing so teams could prep for it. It would certianly make baseball more even but a salary floor is needed more.|||The Yankees will not be as good. And other teams will be able to compete.|||it would be great. Competition would be more fair.|||yankees = fail

How and where should baseball cards be sold?

My dad recently bought a baseball collection from an estate sale. The stuff had never been sorted through, and after doing so, we found some amazing stuff (signed baseballs, augtograhed posters cards, sheets of uncirculated cards). He asked me to try and help sell some of it for him, but the sheer volume that we have is making it ridiculously hard (we had to rent a storage unit to hold his stuff!).

I know a lot of things that we have aren't necessarily valuable. There are cards that we have a thousand of that may not be worth the box that they are in. I did a little research and found a pricing guide at beckett. But unless someone is looking for the card, it's not necessarily as valuable as they say it might be.

Other than ebay/yahoo auctions, is there a place to list the cards/other items we have to sell? Is it better to sell it to a store rather than list each of the cards separately? Or, if selling online, should I try to keep these in sets?|||If you have complete sets, definitely sell them as sets. If you break them up, you will never sell each individual card. EBAY is probably the website that you will get the most money for them, but it will be a lot of work to list them all, package and ship them. Definitely make sure you research the "worth" of the card before you start the auction. Also the condition of which the cards are in, play a major role in how much you will get for them.

As a huge baseball fan and a collector of cards for years, I'm excited just thinking about what you may have. Can I have a peak? :)

Enjoy.|||You could also look around your area to see if there are any upcoming card shows. A table can run anywhere from about 50-100$ for a weekend.|||I am a card buyer and seller, I would recommend selling them on eBay (most car shops want trade in and won't give you a lot of cash). Do not expect to get HI book for your cards in Beckett most sell for Low book value. also, eBay is a good place for selling cards as there are a lot of lookers, just make sure your auction title has the key words, and i would package some of the less worthy cards with some of the more valuable just to get rid of them.
